NJAVA was founded in 2006 by a group of dedicated volunteer managers who wanted to increase the recognition and skill sets of those who coordinate, manage, and lead volunteers across the state of New Jersey.
The organization is a registered 501C3 charitable organization and is led by a Board of Directors and its voting members.

Our Guiding Principles Are:
- To support organizations in fulfilling the full potential of their volunteer resources.
- To be a member-driven organization dedicated to building a community with opportunities for participation, networking, professional development and career enhancement both within NJAVA and in the volunteer resources management field.
- To advance the profession by educating executives and leadership volunteers about volunteer resources management and engaging the government, education, and corporate sectors.
- To maintain contact and serve as the link between our membership and other local, national, and international volunteer resources management related organizations.
- To advocate for the importance of volunteers and volunteerism.
